Abstract

This study was performed on patients in (E Medical College Hospital) Who have undergone chest or abdominal operations under general anesthesia from march to April in 1998. The purpose of this study is to elicit what influences post-operative systematic deep breathing education have on post-operative pulmonary infection.
18 cases of Experimental group were given systematic deep breathing education before and after their operations while 18 cases of control group were not. The education effect was measured by means of fever change, change of WBC number. and X-ray findings according to lapse of time after operation. In this experiment, fever change didn¢¥t show any significant difference between Experimental group given systematic deep breathing education before operation and control group given no education. And there were significant differences between the two groups in the change of WBC number and in chest infection on X-ray.
Accordingly, systematic deep breathing education before and after operation is thought to be effective in preventing or decreasing pulmonary infection after operation. So more active methodical deep breathing education before operation should be used for clinical treatment.
On the basis of this study, the following suggestions could be made.
(1) It is necessary to confirm this systematic deep breathing education is profitable for patients who were operated on other sites.
(2) Lterative studies on indexes showing more easily pulmonary infection on clinical treatment is necessary.
